Why the Wrong Ones Find You (and the Right One Walks Right By)

"He was so charming."

"He was the nicest guy. Everyone said so."

"I never saw it coming."

We hear some version of this all the time. And we understand it, more than you might think. Because in the beginning, he usually is charming. He's attentive. He says the right things. Spend ten minutes with him, or two hours over dinner, and you'd probably like him too.

So this isn't a post about how to spot the wrong one on a first date.

It's about something quieter. Something that was there long before he ever walked in.

You Couldn't Have Seen it in Two Hours

Nobody reads a whole person in one evening. Not you, not us, not anyone.

But over weeks and months, patterns do start to show themselves…if you have the awareness to notice them. And when we look back at the relationships that hurt us most, most of us can find the moment. The comment we brushed off. The feeling in our stomach we talked ourselves out of.

So the more useful question isn't "Why didn't I see it?"

It's gentler than that, and far more powerful:

What in me let him in?

Not what's wrong with me. What signal was I sending that he was such a clear match for?

The Front Door and the Back Door

One night over dinner, Roger said something we haven't stopped thinking about.

Imagine you've been longing for one thing. Just one. Someone who finally pays attention to you. Someone who gives you that one thing you never had growing up. Perhaps someone steady, who won't leave.

Then someone knocks on your front door carrying exactly that. Of course you open it. Of course you welcome him in. It's what you've been asking for.

What you don't see…is everything that’s slipping in through the back door while you're standing there smiling out the front one.

You never put the back door on your list. You weren't looking at it. Your whole signal was focused on that one thing, so that one thing is what you noticed. What you attracted.

But the rest of him came in anyway.

Kim's Back Door

Kim here. I want to tell you about the time I did exactly this, because I didn't understand it until much later.

Years ago, after I lost a great love, I met a man who was kind. Stable. Responsible. And above all…he was not going anywhere.

After the loss I'd been through, that one quality felt like everything. I hung onto it and let it fill the whole room.

He wasn't cruel. He wasn't the charming one who turned out to be someone else entirely. He was a genuinely nice man.

He just wasn't my man.

I stayed nine years. Over time I felt more and more unheard, and more and more angry. And I began to wonder if something was wrong with me. He's a good person. He has his life together. What kind of woman isn't happy with that?

Truthfully, I don't think I ever really believed it. Wondering if something was wrong with me was simply easier than admitting this was never going to be my relationship.

Recently, Roger and I were talking about a woman who married a man everyone described as "the nicest guy." He turned out to be anything but. There was a time, long before this path, when I might have quietly judged her. How could she not have seen it?

Not anymore. Because when I look at my own story, it’s essentially the same one. Different man, different signal…the exact same attraction. We had each opened the front door for one thing, and the rest walked in the back.

There's no judgment in that. Only recognition. And it's the same recognition we bring to everyone who comes to us.

Why the Nice One Walks Right By

Here's the part most people never consider.

Your signals are mostly invisible. They're energy. Good, bad or otherwise. Your friends don't see them. You probably don't either. But the person whose signals match yours picks them up right away…the same way you pick up theirs.

And the grounded, kind man who doesn't carry those same patterns can walk right past you on the street. You won't notice them. They won't notice you. Not because anything is wrong with either of you, but because your signals aren't speaking to each other.

As Roger puts it, it isn't what someone says to you. It's what they activate in you when the invisible signals collide.

That spark you feel in the first five minutes? Sometimes it's chemistry. And sometimes it's familiarity…something in them that matches something deep and old in you. It feels like recognition. It is recognition. Just not always of what you want. But rather what you’re signaling.

Subconsciously.

We always attract exactly what our strongest signals are calling in. Never every belief at once, but enough of the strong ones to make a match.

Where the Signals Come From

Most of our strongest signals were set early, long before we had any say in them.

A four-year-old doesn't have a filter. If the people she depends on show her that men always want control, or that love means keeping the peace, she just takes it in. It becomes her truth. It goes underground. And decades later, it's still sending those same signals.

We hear it in the things women say almost in passing. One woman, imagining a man surprising her with a weekend away, said her first thought was that she'd end up murdered. Another said, simply, "You know how men are."

Those aren't just passing thoughts. They're that signal, speaking out loud.

And here's something worth noticing: our friends often share our signals, because we attract them in much the same way. So when you say "all the good ones are taken," the people around you nod along, and the signal gets a little stronger. So, be gentle and wise about who you tell your story to…and who you let tell it back to you.

How a Signal Changes

There's a difference between living an experience and evolving through it.

Living it sounds like: This is how I grew up. This is all I've seen. So this is what I get.

Evolving through it sounds like: I saw it. I understand where it came from. And now I'm choosing differently.

That shift begins with awareness. When you catch a thought like "he's too good to be true" or "it always ends the same way," pause and ask: Where did that come from? Whose voice is that? Is it still true for the person I am now?

Then thank that four-year-old for doing her best…and let her tight little fingers release those misguided beliefs once and for all, and become something new and different. Better. Intentional.

You don't need lower standards. You need a better filter. And once your signals shift, something interesting happens. The ones who used to feel magnetic start to look obvious. You see them coming from a mile away. And the steady, kind, truly matched person who used to walk right by…finally looks up.

This is the heart of Manifestationship®, and the actual steps we each took, separately, before we ever met. Neither of us got here by luck. We got here by getting honest about what we'd been sending out, and choosing with conscious awareness what we wanted to send instead. And ultimately attract.

What This Means for You

If you've opened the front door before and regretted what came in the back…there is nothing wrong with you. Not then, and not now.

You were attracting exactly what your strongest signals were calling in. Which means something very important—when those signals change, what you attract changes too.

The love you're seeking is out there right now, seeking you. It just needs to be able to hear you.

If something here stirred something in you…a memory, a pattern, a quiet oh, that's me…our Love Signals Reset is a gentle place to begin. With a short guide, a guided meditation, and a few journal prompts, you'll start to notice the signals you've been sending, and where they first began. And more importantly, you’ll begin to change them—which will in turn change who appears at both the front door, and the back.

With love,

Kim and Roger
