Why Some People Leave You Exhausted — And What It's Really Telling You

There is a meme going around right now that made me laugh out loud. And then made me think.

It says: "I'm going to start sending out bills for people who drain my energy. Right now I'm owed $44,000 plus tax."

The comments were full of people saying: Same. Me too.

And while it's funny, there's something underneath it that isn't funny at all.

So many of us are walking around exhausted by our relationships and calling them normal. Bracing ourselves when a certain name shows up on our phone. Leaving conversations feeling somehow less than when we arrived. Staying in friendships and situations that make us uncomfortable, because they've been around for a long time and leaving feels wrong.

There's a word for all of it.

Misalignment.

And once you understand it, really understand it, it changes everything about the relationships you choose, the love you call in, and the way you move through the world.

What Alignment Actually Means

Alignment isn't about finding perfect people. It isn't about surrounding yourself only with those who are easy or agreeable or conflict-free.

It's about finding the people whose energy meets yours in a way that feels right. Genuinely, consistently right. You feel it in your body before you can even explain it. Where you can exhale. Where you can be fully yourself without editing or performing or bracing. Where time together fills you rather than empties you.

And misalignment isn't about someone being a bad person. This is important. The person who drains you isn't necessarily unkind or wrong or broken. They're just not in alignment with who you are. With how your heart works. With what lights you up and what brings you peace. With where you are in your life right now.

That distinction matters more than most people realize. Because it moves us out of judgment, which asks "what's wrong with them?", and into discernment, which asks "what's right for me?"

Those are two completely different questions. And only one of them sets you free.

How Your Body Already Knows

Here's what I find fascinating about misalignment: your body almost always knows before your mind catches up.

You feel it as a low hum of tension when a certain name appears on your phone. A slight bracing before you walk into a room where they'll be. A quiet flatness after spending time together, even when nothing obviously went wrong.

You might feel it as anger. A flash of it when they say something that lands wrong. Something that violates your sense of self or your values. And instead of listening to what that anger is trying to tell us, most of us turn it inward. We ask what's wrong with us for reacting that way. We smooth it over. We move on.

But that anger is information. Just like the tension. Just like the flatness.

You might feel it as a kind of loneliness that shows up in their presence. Not because they're cruel. But because there's no real meeting happening. No genuine exchange. No moment where you feel truly seen or received. And over time you just stop trying. You edit yourself. You soften your truth. You choose safer topics. Because somewhere along the way you've learned that bringing your full self to this relationship isn't worth the energy.

Perhaps you feel it when the conversation is always one directional. When you've become the sounding board for the same problems, week after week, with no real movement and no genuine curiosity about your life in return. When you leave the call having given everything and having been asked nothing. It's not always dramatic. Sometimes it's just a slow, quiet drain that you've normalized over time.

None of these feelings announce themselves loudly. They whisper. And most of us have been taught to override the whisper. To be loyal. To give people the benefit of the doubt. To stay.

But the whisper is information. And it's worth listening to.

The Obligation Trap

One of the most common reasons we stay in misaligned relationships is obligation.

Years of history create a kind of invisible debt. Twenty years of friendship. A family member. Someone who was there during a hard time. And leaving, or even just creating distance, feels like a betrayal of all of that.

So we tolerate. We make excuses. We tell ourselves it's just a rough patch, just a communication difference, just the way they are.

And somewhere in the process we stop trusting our own knowing.

I've heard this from so many people. Someone finally reaches the end of a long, draining relationship and realizes the question they'd been asking was the wrong one. For months, sometimes years, it had been "how could they treat me this way?" And then one day it changed. It became:

"Why have I been tolerating someone who treats me this way?"

That shift. Right there. From what are they doing to what am I allowing.

That's where everything changes.

Because the answer to the first question can keep you stuck forever. People do what they do for a thousand different reasons that have nothing to do with you. But the answer to the second question? That one is entirely yours. And it gives you back your power.

Before You Walk Away

Something worth saying here, because it matters.

Awareness of misalignment isn't an invitation to simply walk away from everyone who challenges you. Real relationships require communication. They require honesty. They require giving people the chance to show up differently.

Before creating distance, there is real value in trying. In saying clearly and kindly: "It hurts me when I hear you say that." In giving someone the opportunity to understand how they're landing with you. Sometimes that conversation changes everything. It opens a door neither of you knew was there.

And sometimes that conversation becomes the foundation for something better. Because boundaries, when communicated with care, aren't meant to push people away. They're meant to create enough safety for the relationship to go deeper. A real friendship, a real partnership, can hold a boundary. In fact it needs them.

And sometimes the conversation confirms what you already knew.

Either way, it's worth trying. For yourself and for them. If it feels worth it to you. Only you can know that.

The Circles of Friendship

Here's something we believe that might shift the way you think about all of this.

Not every friendship is meant to live in the same place in your life. And recognizing that isn't a judgment. It's wisdom.

Think of it like concentric circles. Right at the center, closest to your heart, are the ones in absolute alignment. The people you'd answer without hesitation. Whose call you pick up every time. Whose invitation you say yes to without checking your energy first. Being with them fills you. Full stop.

And then there are other circles. People you care about genuinely, people who have meant something to you, but whose energy requires more careful management. Maybe they're wonderful in small doses. Maybe a birthday text or a warm card once a year is exactly right. Maybe a quick check in here and there is the perfect amount.

That isn't a lesser friendship. It's an honest one.

Because you know, probably better than you've ever admitted out loud, what happens to your energy when it becomes anything more than that. You feel it. Your body tells you. And honoring that isn't unkind.

It's actually one of the most loving things you can do. For yourself and for them.

We're not suggesting you throw relationships away. We're suggesting you get honest about where they belong. Who gets access to the innermost you. And who is better loved from a little further out.

Because your energy is not unlimited. And the people closest to your heart deserve the version of you that hasn't been depleted by everyone else.

Why Friendships Are Your Training Ground

Here's something most people don't consider.

The way you show up in your friendships, what you tolerate, what you stay in out of obligation, how long you override your own knowing, is most likely how you'll show up in romantic relationships too.

If you stay in friendships that drain you because leaving feels wrong, you may find yourself doing the same with a partner.

If you override the whisper in your body because everyone else thinks they're wonderful, that pattern most likely follows you into love.

If you keep asking "what's wrong with me that I can't make this work?" instead of "is this actually right for me?", that question will most likely follow you into love too.

Your friendships are showing you your patterns. They're the training ground. And becoming conscious of alignment there, learning to feel it, trust it, and act on it, is some of the most important preparation you can do for the love you're calling in.

The Most Important Thing I Can Tell You

There will always be people who tell you someone is perfect for you. Who can't understand why you're hesitant. Who see something wonderful in a person that you just can't quite feel.

And they might be right about that person's qualities. They might be genuinely wonderful, kind, available, everything on paper.

But you are the only one who can feel whether someone is in alignment with you. The only one. No one else lives in your body. No one else feels what happens in your nervous system when you're with them. No one else knows what it feels like to be you in their presence.

Trust that. Even when it's inconvenient. Even when it doesn't make logical sense. Even when everyone else thinks you're wrong.

Your alignment signal is one of the most powerful tools you have on the way to the love that's truly meant for you.

And the more you trust it in your friendships, in your daily life, in the small moments, the more available you become to recognize it when the right person arrives.

Because aligned love doesn't feel like bracing.

It feels like exhaling.

If something in this is stirring something in you, if you're starting to wonder what your own energy has been quietly trying to tell you, The Love Signals Reset was created for exactly this moment. For just $14, it gently helps you identify what you've been unconsciously signaling in love, and begin realigning with what you're truly ready to receive.

And when you're ready to go deeper:

With love,
