What To Do When Positive Thinking Feels Like a Lie
You can't think your way out of a story you lived your way into — but here's what you can do.
I had a friend once who was going through a really dark time. She said to me — "I swear if one more person tells me to think positive I'm going to punch them. Do they think I haven't tried?"
I never forgot that.
Because she wasn't wrong. And neither are you if you've ever felt the same way.
By our age, most of us have collected enough bumper sticker wisdom to paper a whole car: what you focus on grows, energy flows where attention goes, just change your mindset, think positive.
And somewhere along the way, those borrowed words stopped landing. Not because we stopped caring. Not because we gave up. But because nobody was telling us how. They were handing us a destination without a map. Worse — they were handing us a destination without ever asking where we were starting from.
Here's what we know to be true: you cannot leap from where you are to where you want to be simply by only deciding to think differently. The mind doesn't work that way. The heart doesn't work that way. And frankly, neither does healing.
The Belief That Lives in Your Body
Most of the stories we carry about love weren't chosen. They were absorbed. Slowly, quietly, over years of childhood experience — often before we were old enough to question any of it. The way love was expressed or withheld, the way conflict was handled or avoided, the things that were said and the things that weren't.
Love is dangerous. Love comes with pain. I am not the kind of person who gets to have that.
These aren't universal truths. They are stories. But they feel like facts because they have lived in our bodies for so long.
And that's exactly why borrowed words can't touch them.
When someone tells you to simply replace "no one ever shows me love" with "I give and receive love with great ease" — your whole system rejects it. Not because you're broken. Not because you're too wounded. But because your mind is actually doing its job. It knows the difference between what is true for you right now and what isn't. And it will not be fooled by words that don't match your felt experience.
Remember Evel Knievel? He made a career out of attempting impossible leaps. And we all watched. And he crashed. A lot. This is what we're asking our minds to do when we try to jump from "I am unlovable" to "I am deeply loved" in one single moment. It's spectacular. It's hopeful. And just like Evel — it usually ends in a crash.
So the question isn't what to think. The question is — how do you actually get from here to there?
The Staircase Nobody Told You About
You can't leap across a canyon. But you can cross it one stepping stone at a time.
This is what we believe with everything we have — and it's what we practice with the people we work with.
Instead of asking your mind to accept something it isn't ready for, you start exactly where you are. And you take the smallest possible step that still feels true.
Start exactly where you are. And take one true step at a time:
"Relationships have always hurt me."
"Some relationships have hurt me."
"I have also experienced moments of real connection."
"I am capable of connection."
"The right connection is possible for me."
"Other people experience genuine love, so why not me."
"Love is available to me."
"I am moving toward the love I deserve."
Do you feel the difference? Each step stretches just a little further than the last. Each one is true enough that your mind can actually accept it. Each one builds momentum — like a dimmer switch turning up slowly in a room you thought was dark. You start seeing things that were always there. Warmth that existed but went unnoticed. Connection that was present but unfelt. Proof that the story you've been living isn't the only story available to you.
You are not pretending. You are not forcing. You are gently, authentically, one true step at a time — rewriting the story from the inside out.
Living Your Way Into a New Belief
Here's the question that keeps coming back to us:
Is it less about thinking your way out — and more about gently living your way into a new belief?
We think so. Because look at how the old belief got there in the first place. You didn't choose it. You didn't sit down one day and decide that love was painful or that you weren't worthy of it. You lived your way into it. Experience by experience. Year by year. Quietly and without your permission.
And that means you can live your way out of it too. Not in an instant. Not with borrowed words. But steadily, honestly, one true step at a time.
You begin to notice — really notice — the love that already exists around you. A friend who shows up. A stranger who is unexpectedly kind. A moment of warmth you might have dismissed before. And something begins to shift. The new story starts to feel more true than the old one. Not because you forced it. Because you lived your way into it.
Just like you lived your way into the old one.
We Believe You Are Capable of This
We want to say something directly to you before we close.
We don't know your specific story. We don't know exactly what you lived through, what was said to you, or what was taken from you. We would never pretend to.
But we do know this — the beliefs that are keeping you from love are not the truth about you. They are the conclusions a younger version of you drew from painful experiences. They made sense then, perhaps when you were too young to question them. They protected you then. But you are not that child anymore.
You are not too far gone. You are not too damaged. You are not too old. And you are absolutely not someone who simply has to accept a life without the love you are seeking.
You are someone who deserves a real pathway. Not borrowed words. A genuine, honest, step by step pathway that starts exactly where you are.
That is what we are here for. And we believe — with everything we have — that you can walk it.
When you're ready — and you'll know when you are — here are two places to begin:
Our free Find Love Again guide offers six questions designed to help you get honest about where you are and what you truly want.
And our From Single to Soulmate workshop walks you through this entire process and more — the beliefs, the patterns, the steps, and the practices that make real change possible.
And, of course, we offer private coaching for anyone who could benefit from a more personal approach.
With love,
Kim and Roger
